After wrapping up The Forever War (you can check out my review here), I’m really excited to dive into the next book in the SF Masterworks series. As you might have guessed from the title of this newsletter, it's I Am Legend (1954) by Richard Matheson!
What’s I Am Legend about?
The book description given in the blurb: "Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman and child on the planet has become a vampire, and they are hungry for Neville's blood.
By day he is the hunter, stalking the undead through the ruins of civilisation. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.
How long can one man survive like this?”
I Am Legend has received remarkable praise from literary giants:
“The most clever and riveting vampire novel since Dracula.” ―Dean Koontz
“I think the author who influence me the most as a writer was Richard Matheson. Books like I Am Legend were an inspiration to me.” ―Stephen King
How will we read it?
We’ll read it over three weeks:
We’ll start reading on Sunday, 2nd February 2025.
On Sunday, 9th February 2025, we’ll discuss Part One - January 1976.
On Sunday, 16th February 2025, we’ll discuss Part Two - March 1976.
On Sunday, 23rd February 2025, we’ll discuss Part Three - June 1978 and Part Four - January 1979.
And feel free to chat along the way.
At the end of the month, I’ll share an overall review of the book, and you’ll be able to leave your thoughts in the comments.
Also, I’m going to watch I Am Legend (2007) starring Will Smith. There are three different adaptations of the book, each with its own twist. Which one are you planning to watch once you’re done reading? Drop a comment—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you for reading, and I hope you’ll join me on this read-along!
